Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of grape juice. The natural chemical balance of grapes allows it to ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Wine is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using yeast, which consume the sugars found in the grapes and converts it into alcohol. Many varieties of grapes are used to make wines. The well known varieties are Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and Shiraz. Others gaining recognition are Malbec and Pinot Noir.

Although other fruits can also be fermented, the resultant wines are named after the fruit from which they are produced. Others, such as barley wine and rice wine (also known as Sake), are made from starch-based materials and resemble beer and liquors more than wine.

While France is well known for its wine production, many other countries such as United States (California and Oregon), Australia, Argentina and Chile are making inroads and producing products that are giving France a run. Also, as a result of small batch production, Boutique wines are becoming very popular. Unlike mass produced ones, these are made by small vineyards that are dedicated to quality, not quantity. It's a lifestyle for these winemakers. Their skills have been passed down through generations and they meticulously grow and select fine grapes for their products. The fermentation, aging and finally filling the bottles is carefully performed with the highest standards.

Many smell the cork after opening the bottle. You should do it also as it is useful to smell the wet end of the cork before drinking the wine. Sometimes the cork will give you advance notice that there is something off about the wine. Even if there are no visible discolorations or growths along the top of the cork, it does not mean that the cork did not harm the wine, or that there isn't some other problem with the wine. A bitter or vinegar like smell means it is of poor quality. You should always look and smell the cork to make sure that the bottle was not exposed to air and that the cork did its job. If there is mold or any other growth on the cork then odds are that air got into the bottle and spoiled the delightful juice in it.
